Watching

Moving out of the East End of London was the best move I have ever made.  Commuting has turned out to be a favourable experience.  Mornings spent snoozing as we hurtle past open fields with lush green grass and bright flowers before the glory of the countryside gives way to the smoke and smog of London li...

Dance on my Grave

Posted by Suzy Athey on Friday, April 15, 2011, In : Stories

I stand behind the huge wooden doors, smiling to myself yet feeling the butterflies flitting through my tummy.

I reach out and take the cold steel of the handle in my hands and turn it very slowly.  A slight click as the latch is freed.  I freeze, worried that the people inside may have heard me to soon but to be honest the sounds, muffled by the heavy doors, are brought closer o...

140wordschallenge - Day Seven

Posted by Suzy Athey on Tuesday, March 8, 2011, In : Stories

I felt the lump a week ago.  Small and hard, reminding me of a frozen pea.

Since then it has been a constant stream of hospitals and tests.  I look well, I feel well but I am worried.  The dreaded C word causing a never ending flutter of fear, pulling my mind this way and that.

I wait now for the results.  In the bleak hospital corridor, I read the array of posters adorning the wa...

140wordschallenge - Day Six

Posted by Suzy Athey on Monday, March 7, 2011, In : Stories

It’s cold and it’s damp.  I cannot see anything.  I can hardly move my body anymore, every ounce of strength I once had, has dissipated.

I’ve been here for a month and I hated it the minute I was put here.  I hate the stuffiness and closed in proximity.  I can’t bear the feeling of things crawling over my body from head to toe.

The smell is the worst I have ever smelt.  ...

140wordschallenge - Day Five

Posted by Suzy Athey on Sunday, March 6, 2011, In : Stories

He burst through the door, all navy blue with shiny shoes and buttons.  His eyes sought mine.  ‘Where is he Caroline’? He said.  The look of fear radiated his entire being, his eyes almost transparent.

‘He’s over there’ I whispered.  I watched as Brandon walked through the archway that Tom had so wanted to build.  I hated it as much as I hated this house but not as much a...

#140wordschallenge - Day Four

Posted by Suzy Athey on Saturday, March 5, 2011, In : Stories

I floated across the stage.  I couldn’t see the audience.

This was the moment I had been waiting for, dreamed of.  Dressed all in black I took in my surroundings as I crossed the floor.

I took centre stage, I stilled and I looked outwards.  And then I waited, listening to the quiet hush of the theatre.  I breathed in the woody scent of the boards and the musky odour from the dec...

#140wordschallenge - Day Three

Posted by Suzy Athey on Friday, March 4, 2011, In : Stories

I stand over her and look at her dowdy complexion.  Amid the overflowing trash cans in this damp, murky alley I realise there is no sound anymore.  All has gone quiet.

I look at her laying still, the life taken from her body.  Her dull lifeless eyes stare at nothing.  Her howls as I ripped open her soft tummy, now silent.

I relive the moment of her capture and almost preen with sati...

#140wordschallenge Day 2

Posted by Suzy Athey on Thursday, March 3, 2011, In : Stories

I watch her again today, she goes to the gym, I see her dark hair damp from the shower I know she has taken.  I watch her go to lunch with him, see her eyes alight, her teeth bright against her dark skin.  I watch her go to the cheap motel she often frequents and watch as her lover gently pats her bottom.

I find the room she is in.  I wait outside and listen, giggling and soft word...

#140wordschallenge Day 1

Posted by Suzy Athey on Wednesday, March 2, 2011, In : Stories
I was challenged to write a fictional piece in 140 words by a fellow blogger on Twitter.  Here is my first offering:

I sit alone, the sounds of keys jangling in the distance, the sounds of metal meeting metal, as the old steel doors close and the keys are turned in the many locks.I sit alone with my thoughts.  No one is here yet but soon they will come to say goodbye.

I sit alone, mem...

Trouble in Town

Posted by Suzy Athey on Tuesday, March 1, 2011, In : Stories

He hit him hard on the nose and he fell to the floor.  Then the other one stamped on his head with his steel cap boots.  The dirt marks all over the black leather, such an inconsequential detail but visible.

Blood oozed all over the pavement outside the flashing sign of the kebab shop, the letter K no longer alight with the neon lights of the other letters, making the shop more ...

Holier Than Thou

Posted by Suzy Athey on Tuesday, March 1, 2011, In : Stories

The stuffy atmosphere makes me sneeze.  A delicate little sneeze but it shocks me all the same and everyone laughs which I find incredulous.  What is so funny about a sneeze?

It may be stuffy but it is very cold in this vast expanse of a room.  I can smell the wooden benches and am close enough to reach out and touch the concrete walls.  But they look so cold, so I keep my arm tu...

Starstruck

Posted by Suzy Athey on Sunday, February 20, 2011, In : Stories

I came across the advert and it was by no means by chance.

“Magnus Film Studios looking for an assistant to work full time.  Please click the attachments at the bottom of this advert to view the full job description and person specification”.

Before clicking the attachments, I did a quick google search, although I already knew that Magnus has just signed Carter Cortez fo...

A Dish Best Served Cold (A Story) 18+ Content

Part One

Everyone has an embarrassing moment in their life that they wish had never happened and failing that, wish they could forget. Most of us can take these memories and either cringe or laugh. I however had never got over mine and I neither laughed nor cringed for many years.

Miami Senior High School meant to be the best years of your life. And for the most part I enjoyed school. I wasn’t a cheerleader, far from it but nor was I a nerd. I kind of slotted in somewhere in ...

Living Again (A Story)

Posted by Suzy Athey on Friday, February 18, 2011, In : Stories
‘Let’s set some ground rules first’ I muttered to myself. I have never been a fan of technology and the wonders of the internet but Sheila, my rather eccentric work colleague and friend had been prattling on at me for weeks to get myself ‘online’. So with my quarterly bonus, I brought myself a little lap top which was apparently a bargain at half the price. Hmm not so sure about that I have to say, imagine how many pairs of shoes I could have been wearing right now.

Meltdown (A Story)

Posted by Suzy Athey on Friday, February 18, 2011, In : Stories
I stand there looking at you and you absolutely disgust me. I cannot fathom where it all went so wrong. What did I do? Why has it turned out this way?

I stand there lost in thought staring at you, remembering my whole life and seeing snippets flash through my mind.

I worked so hard all my life and strived to be the best I could be. I didn’t have it easy at school, I wasn’t the most naturally academic person I knew and everything I studied I had to study at twice as hard as an...
